If you want to get on in your career and you have a team to manage then you must possess and demonstrate a repertoire of key qualities and skills. It doesn’t matter whether you work in a private company, the public sector, or run your own small business – the requirements are just the same. Successful and effective managers:
1. Act as trainers, coaches and mentors.
2. Are fair and consistent in their dealings with staff.
3. Consult regularly with their employees.
4. Do not impose their authority. Instead, they demonstrate a democratic approach.
5. Are good role models for their team.
6. Are aware of, and sensitive to, team members’ needs.
7. Deal with problems in a positive, timely, respectful and constructive manner.
8. Delegate effectively and willingly.
9. Use discipline (where necessary) in a manner that is fair, consistent and constructive.
10. Are good decision makers.
